If you are considering an Assisted Living Facility,
You are probably under the same constraints as I was looking for a new place for your parent(s). There is a laundry list of requirements, location, affordability, time to look, having parents that lived independently for years and getting them to admit and then accept that they need help in their day to day lives. Dementia is setting in so they are confused and overwhelmed at times but lucid enough to know they don’t want to lose their independence.
My parents moved to the Upper Valley of New Hampshire to retire and die in their home town. That was the plan almost forty years ago and it was a good plan as they were amongst friends and family even though the children were in different parts of New England pursuing their careers. The plan went awry when they outlived everyone in the Upper Valley and they had no support to help them with increasing medical issues. The senior apartment facility they were in did not have the medical staff to respond when they needed help. This resulted in numerous ambulance trips for the Emergency Room visits and me traveling two hours to get them home and settled in.
This prompted me in my search for an assisted living facility in the area that I knew they would be comfortable in, get their meds administered to them (they were overmedicating because they couldn’t remember if they took their pills), and allow me easier access to them. I did the usual search through the internet and “A Place for Mom.” Bentley Commons came on the radar and I arranged a tour, liked what I saw and brought my folks down for a tour and interview to see if they would be a good fit. My folks fought tooth and nail not to move as they didn’t want to leave the Upper Valley and were afraid that they wouldn’t be laid to rest in their hometown. Medical necessity stepped in as my father needed radiation treatments on a daily basis and transportation was impossible to work out.
We moved my folks in to Bentley Commons and they began to adapt. My mother, after the first week, mentioned to me that they still had their independence and wasn’t being told what to do or when to do it; it was just like their apartment. I was impressed with the attentiveness of the staff. They knew my folks by name and what they wanted for breakfast as well as tactfully dealing with my mother and her dementia. Unfortunately, my father developed a medical condition and passed away three weeks after arriving at Bentley Commons. The staff performed magnificently in helping my mother through the tough transition.
It has been a couple of months and my mother feels at home, is well fed, feels better as well as looks better due to the regulation of the meds. I have the peace of mind that she is safe, happy and getting the best attentive care. As you look around, be assured that the tour is not a show. The staff has always been courteous and friendly as well as professional. Feel free to contact me about my experience and help give you peace of mind about choosing a great place for your parents to live.
